Cornerstone Core Course Certification
Overview
Courses that count toward Cornerstone Core course area or overlay credit must be certified by the relevant certification committee. Depending on the course or overlay area, certification committees are organized by Faculty Senates, the CAS College Council, or individual departments or programs. A general summary of the CCC certification committees is here.
Certification Policies
Proposals for CCC course certification should include:
- A complete syllabus that includes relevant CCC course-level learning objectives
- An explanation of the kind of direct measures that will be used to assess each CCC course-level learning objective associated with the course or overlay area
- Supplementary materials required by the committee, such as statement explaining how the course meets the more specific certification criteria devised by the committee
- For any courses submitted to a College- or University-level certification committee, evidence that the course has been approved by the instructor's home department
In some cases, submitted courses may need to be revised before receiving approval for CCC credit. According to the SJU Cornerstone Core Curriculum Final Report:
It is incumbent upon the applicant to make the case that their proposed course satisfies the course-level SLOs; and that their proposed instruments will assess the extent to which the elements of the course do so. It is the responsibility of the certifying committee to give the proposer feedback as to the viability of their proposal and/or give the proposer guidance as to revisions they can make to their proposal to attain certification in a timely manner (p. 73).
