Ensuring Web Accessibility

At Saint Joseph's University, we are committed to providing an accessible web experience for all users, including those with disabilities. Web accessibility is not just a legal requirement—it’s essential for creating a welcoming digital environment. As a site editor, ensure your content adheres to current accessibility standards.

WCAG Guidelines

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the primary standards for web accessibility. WCAG outlines principles, guidelines, and success criteria designed to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities.

What Can You Do to Ensure Accessibility?

  • Use Accessible Images: All images, charts, and graphics must include descriptive alt text to provide context to users who cannot see them. The alt text should describe the image in a meaningful way and convey the same information that a sighted user would receive.
  • Ensure Proper Color Contrast: Many users with visual impairments rely on color contrast to read text and identify elements on a page. To ensure good visibility use high contrast between text and background colors and avoid relying solely on color to convey important information. One example would be avoiding the use of black text on a crimson background.
  • Provide Text Alternatives for Multimedia:
For video content, provide text transcripts and captions. This ensures that users with hearing impairments or those who prefer to read have access to the same information. For videos that rely on visual elements to convey important information, consider adding audio descriptions for users with visual impairments.

By adhering to these guidelines and staying proactive about accessibility, you will help ensure that our university’s website is usable for everyone, regardless of their abilities.

  • Misspellings detected on your site
