PHILADELPHIA (June 1, 2010) -- The City of Philadelphia Fire Department bestowed a Fire Prevention Partnership Award upon Saint Joseph’s University during its annual award ceremony at the Philadelphia Fire Training Academy.

Patricia Griffin, director of Saint Joseph’s Criminal Justice and Public Safety Institute (CJPSI), accepted the award from Commissioner Ayers at a ceremony on May 21, 2010, recognizing the University for its role in supporting the fire prevention efforts of the city. Griffin serves as a member of the Philadelphia Fire Department's Citizens Fire Prevention Committee. “I value the opportunity to continue a legacy of engagement with members of the public safety community and our Philadelphia neighbors,” said Griffin.

“The award recipients have displayed acts of courage, pride and selfless sacrifice for our city. Combined with the generous support of services and donations we receive from our partners this day of recognition is befitting,” said Commissioner Lloyd Ayers in a news release.

Saint Joseph’s has sponsored the City Wide Fire Prevention Essay Contest for middle school students over the past 14 years. The University also sponsors and hosts the annual Fire Prevention Drama Contest, welcoming youths to perform at Bluett Theatre on campus.

“Our involvement in these events provides opportunities for elementary school children to reflect on how they can advance fire safety practices in their homes and communities,” said Paul DeVito, Ph.D., vice provost of academic affairs and dean of the College of Professional and Liberal Studies. “The University’s collaborative work on multiple fire prevention initiatives reflects our commitment to mission-driven curriculum and endeavors – being men and women for others.”

Saint Joseph’s University’s commitment to education goes beyond raising fire safety awareness among schoolchildren. In conjunction with the Firefighter’s Union, Saint Joseph’s is dedicated to professional development of leaders in the field, offering discounted tuition to employees of the Philadelphia Fire Department.
