Hank Gillen Named Director of Saint Joseph’s University’s Office of Veteran Services

PHILADELPHIA (Dec. 6, 2017) — Hank Gillen (U.S. Army) has been named the director of the Office of Veteran Services at Saint Joseph’s University. After a distinguished career in military service, teaching and project management, Gillen has assumed the directorship following the retirement of Ralph Galati ’70 (USAF), the inaugural director who served a three-year term.

“Saint Joseph’s and the Haub School’s Office of Veterans Services are pleased to welcome Hank Gillen as director,” says HSB Dean Joseph DiAngelo Jr. ’70, Ed.D. “Hank’s leadership experience in a variety of venues — most notably, his 14-year active service career in the U.S. Army — position him well to lead the office to the next level of excellence in its commitment to serving those who have served our country.”

“I’m honored to be given the opportunity to assist all of our student-veterans, service members and dependents to identify and achieve their educational and career goals, as they accept the calling to live greater,” says Gillen.

During his Army career in both the United States and Europe, Gillen held a variety of leadership and instructional positions. As a unit commander, he directed all personnel, training and readiness activities of a 110-person prototype unit. He also taught Russian at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and led the international student division of the Army’s Artillery School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Following his military service, he co-founded ATI International, Inc., a business development firm targeting emerging markets in Eurasia. He spent 10 years in project management with frequent travel to the oil fields of Siberia, and guided clients through many tasks, from winning contracts to sustaining joint ventures. During this time, he also served as an adjunct instructor of business.

Gillen speaks German and Russian. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a master of arts degree in Slavic studies from Cornell University, and a master of business administration degree from Long Island University.

The Office of Veterans Services is committed to honoring those who have served our country by providing opportunities for education and career advancement. The office develops and implements Entrepreneurship Programs for Veterans, with specific emphasis on disabled veterans; supports the student-veteran community, including dependents, with a suite of programs and services that ensure full utilization of entitled benefits; and builds a network of veteran-friendly businesses, mentors and civic organizations that are dedicated to career development and job placement initiatives.
