On The Job: Claire Powell BS ’27

Claire Powell, BS ‘27, is a junior with a major in communication studies and two minors in environmental studies and public policy. This summer, she is interning for Tokio Marine American Services, a sister company of Philadelphia Insurance Companies. During her classes at Saint Joseph’s, she has developed strategic communication and strong collaboration skills, which have helped her with the work she has done so far in her internship. During her internship, Powell has helped create a SharePoint Site for PHLY Foundation and is completing two projects with both PHLY and TMNAS fellow interns, which they will present at the end of the internship. Most of the work Powell has done is around nonprofit work that the PHLY Foundation does.

The Day-to-Day:

Every day, I work on different tasks. There are days I am learning about individuals' past volunteer work and writing about it, while other days I am meeting with nonprofits and my group members for my two project presentations. My day also includes SharePoint editing and learning more about the design features, and meeting different TMNAS and PHLY employees.

It’s 10 a.m. on a workday, what are you up to?

At 10 a.m., I am often editing a story on SharePoint, making sure my writing flows, and locating photos from different events to add.

Go-to snack or drink that gets you through the day:

I often have Pita chips and hummus at my desk, which keep me energized while I work.

My “I nailed it” moment:

I have recently felt like I am able to format everything quickly and efficiently on SharePoint, allowing me to feel more confident and ask the design team fewer questions.

Favorite part of your role:

I have enjoyed meeting with the nonprofits and learning more about the impact that PHLY Foundation makes. I have also greatly enjoyed the people at the company who have been wonderful mentors, specifically my manager who I have been able to work closely with and truly learn the work she does daily.

I often wear business casual pants and a nice shirt, both usually comfy and professional.

Tips for the next intern:

Don’t be afraid to reach out to different employees at the company; everyone is extremely kind and helpful, always!

Something the interns have gotten to do is speak to the CEO of TMNAS and PHLY, John Glomb, who was informative and very interesting.
