What is the Environmental and Sustainability Studies Minor?

Through the environmental and sustainability studies program, students will gain an understanding of the biggest issues impacting our environment, including climate change and declining energy resources. You will learn how ecology, economics, society, politics and governmental regulation impacts sustainability efforts and the environment as a whole. All students will take at least one lab-based course that focuses on ecology, biology and environmental science to examine the earth. While completing this minor, you will also study the following topics:

  • Natural resources
  • Population
  • Pollution
  • Ecosystems
  • Biogeochemical cycles
  • Biodiversity

Ways to Study Environmental and Sustainability Studies at Saint Joseph's University

This program is only available as a minor. Students must take six courses for the minor in environmental and sustainability studies. Courses taken to fulfill requirements of the minor may also fulfill the GEP or overlay (Ethics, Globalization/Diversity, Writing Intensive) requirements as well as the student’s major.

What Can I Do With an Environmental and Sustainability Studies Minor?

As an environmental and sustainability studies minor, you will develop a close understanding of our planet, economic problems and solutions and past and present societal responses to environmental issues. With this skill set, students have gone on to pursue jobs as the following:

How Will Saint Joseph's University Prepare Me for a Career in Environmental and Sustainability Studies? 

At Saint Joseph’s University, environmental and sustainability minors develop skills to address the moral and social dilemmas associated with solving environmental problems. You will receive an introduction to the political, economic, social, scientific and philosophical concerns involved in environmental issues. You will read, discuss and write about current controversial topics and concerns integrating these disciplines of study. After completing this program, you will understand the interdisciplinary nature of environmental science and learn how to address the challenges that come with solving environmentally related problems in our society.
