Office of Inclusion and Diversity, Faith-Justice Institute Present Black History Month Events
Saint Joseph’s University will host a variety of events throughout February to mark Black History Month. The programs celebrate the historical and ongoing social, political, spiritual, artistic and economic contributions of African-American communities.
PHILADELPHIA (January 29, 2018) – Saint Joseph’s University will host a variety of events throughout February to mark Black History Month. The programs, offered by the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, Faith-Justice Institute and Black Student Union, celebrate the historical and ongoing social, political, spiritual, artistic and economic contributions of African-American communities.
“The variety of collaborative programs planned this month speaks to the ways that we can approach learning about history and the present in order to create a more just world,” says Monica Nixon, Ph.D., assistant provost for inclusion and diversity. “People from the Black diaspora have influenced much of what we understand as American history, and one goal of our programming is to make that influence much more visible.”
Black History Month events are listed below:
- “Real Talk Tuesday,” a conversation with Student Inclusion and Diversity; Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. in the Center for Inclusion and Diversity (Campion 213).
- Trip to the African American Museum in Philadelphia, hosted by the Black Student Union; Saturday, Feb. 10; email bsu@sju.edu for details.
- Lecture presented by the Sr. Thea Bowman Lecture Series on “The Real Record on Racial Attitudes” by leading scholar in race relations Camille Charles, Ph.D., professor of sociology, African studies and education at the University of Pennsylvania; Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. in the Campion Student Center's North Lounge
- Lecture presented by The Joseph William and Madeline Eberle Klein Fund and the Faith-Justice Institute, “From Safety to Redemption: The Catholic Call to Dismantle Racism” by Sr. Patricia Chappell; Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Cardinal Foley Center.
- Outing to see the film “Black Panther” with the Black Student Union, Student Inclusion and Diversity and Office of Residence Life; Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at the United Artists Riverview Theater.
- Political strategist Angela Rye, principal and CEO of IMPACT Strategies, presents the Diversity Lecture Series; Thursday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. in Banquet Hall North of the Campion Student Center.
- Black Student Union Talent Show; Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Perch.
