Communication studies student Edward Jenkins, BA ’25, spent his summer as a media coordinator for Camp Kinney, which is run through Saint Joseph’s Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support. Whether he’s interviewing scholars or recording B-roll of fun camp moments, Jenkins’ internship has allowed him to sharpen his media skills while tapping into his creativity.

The Role:

The Day-to-Day:

In the mornings, I come in to do my editing for the videos. And then at noon, I go help with the campers and the SCHOLARS, teaching the students how to manage and improve certain behaviors, such as social interactions or anger management. Once my lunch is done, I join back with the SCHOLARS and the campers to continue working with the students. And that's the end of the day. We fill out our noodles ( a progress marker) and just talk about how our campers’ days went so the parents can see the progress they’ve made.

Go-to snack or drink that gets you through the day:

Water and Skinny Pop

My “I nailed it” moment:

Honestly, when I record the B-roll and I'm capturing the SCHOLAR-to-camper interaction. I’m capturing the moments that the SCHOLAR is having with the camper, like that peer-to-peer, that heart-to-heart. I'm thinking about how the video is going to come out in my head ahead of time to capture it. So when I get those shots and I see those shots, I feel like I nailed it.

Favorite part of your role:

My favorite part of the job really is being able to bring out my creativity, because I'm making the content on my own while also meeting the requirements they have for their programming. And I think when I do it in that way, and to see the impact it has, compared to maybe some other videos, it just makes me feel like I stand out. It just makes me feel like, “I did that.” I feel great about being able to better my abilities.
