Mariana Arnabar, BS ’26, a senior double majoring in marketing and leadership, ethics and organizational sustainability spent her summer in upstate New York as an intern for E&J Gallo Winery’s sales leadership development program. During June and July, Mariana learned about the in’s and out’s of sales in the wine and spirits industry, making connections and leaving with a full-time offer.

The Role:

The Day-to-Day:

I would say every day is different. But on a day that I was shadowing an employee, we would meet up at a Dunkin, get a quick breakfast, and then we'd go over the sales goals that we wanted to meet that day and the accounts. When I say accounts, those are the liquor stores that we were going to. I was focused on retail this summer because upstate New York is an independent market when it comes to liquor and spirits. And so we would go over that. We would briefly review the accounts and their sales history. And then we would literally just drive to the farthest account and then make our way back. And basically we would go into each store, survey, look for opportunities, and then we would talk to the account buyers, see what order they had in mind, and then, depending on the sales goals, pitch a product.

Be open to everything. You’ll make mistakes, but it's totally fine. You're there to learn, ask as many questions as you can, meet as many people and network with as many people, and just show up excited every day.”

My “I nailed it” moment:

Getting a job offer for after graduation!

Favorite part of your role:

Meeting so many amazing people. It's so cliche, but the people of Gallo really made it such a special experience. But also meeting each owner of the stores. Those are probably some of the hardest working people I've ever met. And just learning about their lives and why they're in the liquor business and all that stuff.

Tips for the next intern:

Be open to everything. You’ll make mistakes, but it's totally fine. You're there to learn, ask as many questions as you can, meet as many people and network with as many people, and just show up excited every day.
