Saint Joseph’s Achieves National University Status, Earns Top Rankings From ‘U.S. News & World Report’
The milestone caps four years of strategic transformation, including two mergers and a major expansion into the health professions.
Saint Joseph’s University has been reclassified as a national university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, reflecting Saint Joseph’s growing academic portfolio, national reach and years of strategic growth.
Alongside this reclassification, St. Joe’s earned high marks in this year’s U.S. News & World Report rankings, placing in the top 75 best value schools in the nation, the top 75 private colleges in the nation and the top 150 colleges in the country overall.
“Our moment is here,” says Jean McGivney-Burelle, PhD, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. “For the past four years, we have undergone a remarkable transformation that includes two strategic mergers, a deep portfolio expansion into the health professions and retention and success rates that far outpace national averages.”
U.S. News weighs graduation and retention rates, post-graduate earnings and faculty resources most heavily in its rankings. These measures have long defined a Saint Joseph's education. Factors tied to student outcomes and success, including graduation and retention rates, account for more than half of the total ranking formula.
The recognition places Saint Joseph’s among a larger, more competitive landscape of colleges and universities — advancing the University from a regional classification to a national one. The University is also ranked among the nation's top institutions by Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, The Princeton Review, Niche and TIME, other leading publications, further proof that a degree from Philadelphia’s Jesuit University carries weight nationwide.
