St. Andrew’s Society Awards SJU Sophomore with Yearlong Scholarship

The St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia has awarded sophomore George Frattara ’20, of Warrington, Pennsylvania, the St. Andrew's Scholarship. The $25,000 award will enable Frattara to study at the University of St. Andrew's in Fife, Scotland, during the 2018-19 academic year.

“George was an outstanding candidate for the St. Andrew's Scholarship because of his strong academic credentials and his interest in the philosophy and literature of Scotland,” says Mark Reynolds, Ph.D., director of fellowships. “He will begin his research this summer with Dr. Peter Norberg in the department of English before beginning his year abroad, which will allow George to pursue his passion for the literature and philosophy of social justice and the environment.”

Frattara, an English and philosophy double major and finance minor, believes that St. Andrew’s world-renowned philosophy and English education programs will advance his academic and personal goals. He plans to pursue a law degree after completing his undergraduate studies.

“I felt the need to do more with my time at Saint Joseph’s,” says Frattara, an Honors student and outdoor enthusiast. “I’m thrilled to have the privilege to study at St Andrew's.” 

The award marks the eighth consecutive year, and the ninth overall, that a Saint Joseph’s student has received a scholarship from the St. Andrew’s Society, which was founded in 1958 to foster understanding between Scotland and the United States.

The St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia seeks to “promote understanding between Scotland and the United States," and each year awards a limited number of $25,000 scholarships to outstanding sophomore students who demonstrate a history of academic accomplishments and participation in extracurricular activities, for studies at one of the “four ancient” Scottish universities during their junior year.

His adviser, Peter Norberg, Ph.D., professor of English, recommended that Frattara apply for the scholarship. 

“George is an exceptional student with a rich interdisciplinary interest in philosophy, literature and environmental sustainability,” says Norberg. “The St. Andrew's Society scholarship will allow him to gain an international perspective on these areas of study that will benefit him both personally and professionally.”

Each year, the St. Andrew’s Society awards scholarships to nominees from 18 colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area. Recipients can choose to study during their junior year at one of four Scottish universities, including the University of St. Andrew's, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Aberdeen and the University of Glasgow.
