Dear Members of the SJU Community,

Serving as Saint Joseph’s president is an honor, privilege, and joy. I love this University and community. It is with mixed emotions, therefore, that I write to share that I will step down as president of Saint Joseph’s on August 15th to become the next president of Loyola University Chicago.

This opportunity at Loyola was unexpected. My decision was made even more difficult by the excellent people with whom I am fortunate to work and the successes we have achieved and experienced together as a community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni over the past seven years. Yet, as I discerned and prayed about the decision, I came to the peaceful conclusion that this move is where I am called to be.

I have every confidence in the University’s unfolding plans and trajectory. Saint Joseph’s is in the midst of one of the most exciting chapters of its nearly 175-year history. Because of the dedication this institution and everyone associated with it has to our Jesuit, Catholic mission, coupled with the current leadership team and Board of Trustees, Saint Joseph’s marches forward with faith and strength to dare, and a steadfast commitment to excellence with purpose. No one will be cheering more than me the future successes of our students, faculty, and community.

James M. Norris ’85, chair of the Board of Trustees, will communicate with you about the transition plan and search for Saint Joseph’s next president. I look forward to my remaining months on Hawk Hill.

The Hawk Will Never Die.

Gratefully,

Signature of Mark C. Reed, Ed.D., President of Saint Joseph's University
