Isabel Casey, BS ’22, MSW ’25, is spending two semesters as an intern at Nemours Children's Hospital helping in the hematology unit with patients who have sickle cell anemia and hemophilia. The social work graduate student has gained valuable skills inside and outside of the classroom, including job experience as a graduate assistant at the Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support.

The Role:

Social Worker, Nemours Children’s Hospital

Describe your internship in three emojis:

💻 (desk work)

👥 (collaboration)

💬 (talking with patients)

The Day-to-Day:

Setting up transportation for patients, and researching food pantries and resources for other basic needs to provide to patients and their families. Many days come with new assignments and different tasks as well, which leads to great learning opportunities!

It’s 10 a.m. on a workday, what are you up to?

I have just finished our initial wrap-in meeting with the team and am reviewing task assignments created and discussed with my supervisor. This could potentially include meeting with patients and providing resources such as meal cards or food that they can bring home with them following their appointment.

Go-to snack or drink that gets you through the day:

Orange flavored Celsius!

My I “nailed it” moment:

My supervisor was out for jury duty so I was given more independence and completed assessments by myself (and checked in with another supervisor after). It was my first time doing this alone but I was able to provide the patient the resources and support that they needed and it felt great!

Favorite part of your role:

Meeting patients and building a rapport with them! Many interests they have include Xbox gaming and LEGOs, which are fun topics to talk about.

Fit check:

Business casual clothes, usually black work pants, a bright colored sweater and loafers.

Tips for the next intern:

Be confident! Working at a new place can be intimidating but learning that it is okay to make mistakes and receiving feedback will help you to grow into a great practitioner! Take notes and ask questions, it is always okay to clarify if you do not fully understand the assignment and need extra insight!
