On Nov. 13, Saint Joseph’s University’s Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management will honor Kara Raiguel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Gen Re, with its “Executive of the Year” award at The Union League of Philadelphia.

Since 2013, the University has recognized an executive who exemplifies leadership, innovation and integrity in the insurance industry. Honorees serve as role models, demonstrating the importance of critical thinking, ethical decision-making and a lifelong commitment to social justice – values at the heart of a Jesuit education.

“Kara has distinguished herself as a forward-thinking executive whose potent combination of strategic leadership skills and decisive, incisive vision has been profoundly impactful at Gen Re as well as the global reinsurance industry,” says Mary Ann Cook, EdD, executive director of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management. “Her commitment to excellence, collaboration, and ethical servant-leadership embodies the principles we champion at the Academy.”

Raiguel began her career in 1994 with CIGNA Property & Casualty before joining Berkshire Hathaway’s reinsurance division in Stamford, Connecticut, where she spent 16 years advancing through leadership roles. During her tenure, she managed Guard Insurance Group, oversaw the division’s India reinsurance portfolio and Berkshire Hathaway’s financial guaranty insurer, BHAC. She also established a California workers’ compensation portfolio for National Liability & Fire Insurance Company. In May 2016, she was appointed president and chief executive officer of Gen Re, one of the world’s leading reinsurers. A Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, Raiguel holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Ursinus College.

“It’s a privilege to be recognized by an institution that shares my belief in attracting and developing thoughtful leaders for our industry,” says Raiguel. “The Academy’s work to prepare students for meaningful, values-driven careers is essential to the future of our industry. I look forward to seeing how these emerging leaders will continue to evolve with and strengthen the profession in the years ahead.”

Proceeds from the event will help to fund student programming, student pipeline development and diversification, and technology innovation initiatives within Saint Joseph’s Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management.
