Saint Joseph's University has established the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) & Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to minimize recognizable hazards associated with the handling, use, and storage of chemicals/hazardous materials in the laboratories.

The Biosafety Manual & Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provides a practical overview of proper work practices and the requirements for regulatory compliance with laws and guidelines governing proper use, containment and disposal of biological hazards.

The purpose of the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard is to reduce occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens that employees may encounter in the workplace through adherence to the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.

The Radiation Safety Manual & Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) help ensure that work with radioactive materials are conducted in a safe manner and complies with federal and state regulations and the conditions on our State radioactive materials license.

The goal of the Hazard Communication Program (also known as HazCom) is to protect people from injuries and illnesses associated with using hazardous chemicals in the workplace and comply with the requirements of the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.

Chemical, biological and radioactive waste does not belong in the general trash or recycling under any circumstance.  A contractor approved by EHRS is utilized and disposes of hazardous chemical waste according to EPA and Pennsylvania DEP regulations.

Universal Wastes are wastes that do meet the regulatory definition of hazardous waste, but are managed under special, tailored regulations. These wastes include re-chargeable/hazardous batteries, pesticides, lamps/fluorescent bulbs and mercury-containing equipment/thermostats.

In accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Saint Joseph's has implemented several health and safety programs to protect employees as they carry out their work functions, and to provide a safer campus learning and work environment for all community members.

This program applies to all SJU personnel and student workers exposed to potential physical and/or health hazards that require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE includes items worn the provide eye, face, foot, hand, head, body, hearing, or respiratory protection.
