To celebrate Campus Sustainability Month and the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Saint Joseph's University will host a number of events throughout the month of October 2026. Check back on this page for updates as additional events and information are added.

Creation Care Masses

Chapel of St. Joseph
To celebrate the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology, prayers and hymns related to Laudato Si' and creation care will be integrated into the Sunday masses held at the Chapel of St. Joseph on the SJU Hawk Hill campus.

Environmental Justice: Social Architecture for a Resilient Community

Hear from local expert Jerome Shabazz, Executive Director of the Overbrook Environmental Education Center, about the history of local environmental justice issues, why we should care, and what can be done to address them.

Community Cleanup

Meet outside the Chapel of St. Joseph
Join us for a trash cleanup of the SJU campus and surrounding areas. Drop by our check-in table to get supplies and a zone assignment, and stop back by at the end of your shift to drop off your supplies and full bags to get weighed.

Native Plants Workshop

Barnes Arboretum at Saint Joseph's University (50 Lapsley Lane)
Join the Lower Merion Conservancy and SJU Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Collaborative for an event about the many benefits of native plants, including pollinator habitat and stormwater absorption. Participants will take home a pot of native plants that can be put outside their door or on their balcony.

Legacy Tree Walk

Barnes Arboretum at Saint Joseph's University (50 Lapsley Lane)
Join Head Gardener Katie Jacoby for a guided garden tour of legacy trees. You'll learn how they are cared for, their unique histories, and how they provide increased ecological value as they age. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to explore.

Thriving Communities Symposium

The Overbrook Environmental Education Center’s 2026 Thriving Communities Symposium will be guided by the theme “Building Capacity for Sustainable and Resilient Communities.” The symposium is designed to connect participants with structured technical assistance and essential resources. Its focus is to strengthen core competencies, deepen leadership development, and enhance operational systems that equip communities to thrive.
