WHAT IS A CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE MINOR?
Saint Joseph’s University’s Chinese language and culture minor provides a foundation in the culture , perspectives and societal behaviors of the Chinese people. As a Chinese major or minor, you will take language courses that utilize advanced teaching methods and cutting-edge instructional materials and technology. If you’re a beginner or intermediate, you will develop proficiency in aural comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and word processing in Mandarin Chinese. In addition to taking six required courses totaling 18 credits, you will also take a class on Chinese culture, which may be taken in English.

Having the ability to converse in Chinese is a valuable skill that can be applied to any profession. Whether you are pursuing a career in healthcare, business, marketing, international relations, teaching, law or any other pursuit, a Chinese language and culture minor will equip you with the skills necessary to converse with those who speak the language. You will be encouraged to participate in English language-based courses in Chinese culture to enrich your knowledge of Chinese history, philosophy and culture. You will have opportunities to participate in study abroad programs, including faculty-led summer programs and semester programs in China.
HOW TO PURSUE A CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE MINOR AT SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY
Some students combine a minor in Chinese with a major or minor in Asian studies, but you can also combine it with several other majors.
The Asian studies program at Saint Joseph’s University prepares students for graduate study or professional work by exposing them to the language, history, culture, and politics of the region. This interdisciplinary program is designed to offer greater understanding by immersing students into the study of Asia.
