Intensive Structured Literacy with Wilson Level I Certificate
Saint Joseph’s University’s Intensive Structured Literacy with Wilson Level 1 certificate program provides teachers with the knowledge and skills to help students become fluent, independent readers. The program consists of 13 credits and can be completed online. Certificate credits can also be applied towards the Special Education MS and Education MS for all grade levels, and you may be eligible to earn your Wilson Reading System ® Level 1 certification upon completion of the certificate program. This program is accredited at the plus level by the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.

Structured LiteracyTM is characterized by the provision of systematic, explicit instruction and writing and emphasizes the structure of that integrates listening, speaking, reading, language across the speech sound system (phonology), the writing system (orthography), the structure of sentences (syntax), the meaningful parts of words (morphology), the relationship among words (semantics) and the organization of spoken and written discourse.

Upon completion of Saint Joseph’s reading interventionist certificate, you may also be eligible to earn your Wilson Reading System ® Level 1 certification and be included in Wilson’s tutor referral service. A Level 1 certification trains you to help students with reading and spelling challenges using the Wilson Reading System’s research-based strategies.

Saint Joseph’s reading interventionist certificate program is offered online and designed to meet the needs of working educators and professionals in the field who are looking to advance their careers or change paths. Our online programs provide personal attention from faculty as well as opportunities for meaningful interactions with your peers. Online courses use the same rigorous curriculum and expert faculty as our on-campus programs. In addition to online coursework, field experience is an expected component of the program and includes a 65-hour practicum with an individual student, as well as other field-based experiences.

This program is accredited at the plus level by the International Dyslexia Association. This program prepares candidates to provide targeted or intensive reading interventions that reflect the principles and practices of Structured LiteracyTM to individual and small groups of students who have a primary need for remediation of decoding-strand skills and encoding (phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency). Students may be deemed as “at-risk”, may have an identified Specific Learning Disability, or may have an identification of Dyslexia.
Only 33% of American 4th grade students and 31% of American 8th grade students met the criteria for “at” or above” on the 2022 National Assessments of Education Progress (NAEP) for Reading. Structured Literacy instruction and interventions provide a strong core of highly explicit, systematic teaching of foundational skills such as decoding and spelling, as well as explicit teaching of other important components of literacy such as vocabulary, comprehension and writing.
