Reading Specialist Certificate
Offered 100% online, Saint Joseph’s University’s Reading Specialist Certificate is a 24-credit program designed for teachers who hold a master’s in education and Level 1 Certification and seek to pursue certification as a reading specialist. It is ideal for teachers seeking to change their education career and/or those seeking to increase their knowledge of best practices in reading instruction. Students can also use this certificate to help fulfill the Pennsylvania Masters Plus 15 and/or Masters Plus 30 credits to advance their careers.

Reading Specialist Certificate courses are offered entirely online to accommodate working teachers' schedules. Students can typically complete field work at their current school site. What Can You Do With A Reading Specialist Certificate?
Individuals who earn a reading specialist certificate go on to become reading specialists, acting as consultants in planning the direction and supervision of a school’s reading program and will analyze, design, implement and evaluate literacy curricula. Graduate assistantships offer tuition remission and a stipend. Positions are available, but highly competitive. Once you apply, please note that all offices manage their hiring individually and will contact individual candidates if interested.

Admission Information

Requirements for applicants holding Level 1 Certification are required to provide evidence of the following:
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0
To receive the Reading Specialist Certificate, you must maintain a 3.0 GPA and participate in two formal observations in EDU 705 (2-PDE 430 forms submitted). You also must pass the Praxis Exam: Reading Specialist (5301).
